With all the media buzz this week about the "Christian pastor" in Florida and his plans to burn about 100 Korans on Saturday, it has reminded me that the Christian message has a gentle, but tough side to it that the media rarely covers. It takes many forms, but one of the best expressions of Christianity in action is through compassion for the welfare of others during a disaster and the opportunity of hope the Gospel can bring.
My state convention has been heavily involved in Disaster Relief in Haiti as a result of the massive 7.0 earthquake there on January 12. Along with other state convention DR teams, Oklahoma has been providing medical care, meals, and digging water wells to provide relief for the millions of people who have been impacted by this disaster. Part of our annual State Missions Offering (SMO) helps fund our Disaster Relief teams so that they are ready to roll as soon as disaster strikes, from ice storms in Oklahoma, hurricane relief on the Gulf Coast, or an earthquake in Haiti.
