We are trying an experiment at the church I serve as interim Discipleship Director. Northwest Baptist Church in Oklahoma City has had a strong emphasis in Sunday School and discipleship over the years. We are noticing that because the membership is spread all over the OKC metroplex, developing friendships beyond Sunday morning acquaintances is difficult. So we came up with the idea of having home groups this summer.
This summer, we are encouraging our adults to join a Summer Home Group. We are using Tim Keller's new resource The Prodigal God, as our resource. We are asking each group to set aside time at each meeting to eat together, pray, fellowship, and then discuss and share what they are learning from their book.
This past Sunday was our first day to promote the home groups and we have received a very good response. Below is the promo video for The Prodigal God:
Great idea. Like the trailer video.

Do you have many people who leave town in the summer for vacations or family retreats?

Ray... we're like most other churches, yes we do! Prodigal God is a 6 week study, and the groups have about 10 weeks during the summer.
The groups don't have to meet every week if they don't want to. We are essentially organizing the groups and then giving them the flexibility to meet when they can as long as they finish the study by summer's end.
